Why do I need to clean and waterproof my horse rug?

Correct care and maintenance = enhanced performance
which in turn provides more comfort for your horse and prolonged life of your rug.

RUG WASHING
In wet or damp conditions your horse will get clammy, uncomfortable and cold if the breathability of their rug is impaired. To keep your horse warm and dry, it is important to regularly clean and reproof the rug in order to maintain its water repellency and breathability.
​
Manufacturers apply a durable water repellent coating (DWR) to rugs. Dirty rugs attract and hold water, known as wetting out. When the fabric is saturated, sweat and moisture will not be able to escape, which will reduce its insulating properties and ability to breathe.
​
We use Nikwax products to effectively remove dirt, sweat and contaminants to help revitalise water repellency and breathability.

RUG WATERPROOFING

Eventually the manufacturers durable water repellent coating (DWR) will wear off. At this point the rug becomes susceptible to wetting out.
​
Reproofing to renew this coating will prolong the life of your rug by maintaining the waterproof layer.
​
Our reproofing is performed as a separate cycle in the washing machine and not just added to the rinse cycle, or sprayed on.
